What is the genre?
Spirit Foul is a fictional story. The main storylines are sports underdog and mystery, though the book is highly greased with elements of fantasy. The whole thing is held together with friendship!
Where does it take place?
Spirit Foul takes place in WallowOp; a fictitious land that looks very similar to America in the years 2000-2001. This was a creative decision to attempt to prevent biases from the outside world from being brought to the book. I took only what I wanted from our world to tell the story.
What kind of Ultimate do they play?
Ultimate in Spirit Foul will feel very similar to anyone that’s played by the USAU ruleset.
While we follow the Rat Stars’ season as they compete in CULT (College Ultimate League Tournaments), we also get to know the Professional Ultimate Frisbee Federation (PUFF), the 8-team pro league in WallowOp.
I do not classify the college division, or PUFF league, like USAU does in America. In Spirit Foul, we see men, women, and nonbinary characters competing on the same field at the same time.
Decisions made during the creative process were based on the ability to be true to the Ultimate community that I love.
So… There’s magic?
You betcha! Spirit Foul starts without magic, and then some strange things start happening… Characters learn to direct a magical force that is linked with Ultimate and allows them to throw better, jump higher, layout further, etc. It compliments the story nicely.
Is this a standalone book?
Without making too many promises, I am working on a sequel to release as soon as possible.
